If you are looking for a 1965 or 1966 Mustang Convertible project car for sale, this may be one that you want to consider.  Our buddy, Dave Redman, has this very early production (March 19, 1964 scheduled production date) 1964 1/2 Mustang Convertible for sale.  I needs a lot of work, but it is pretty complete with a lot of the early, unique parts still intact.

1965 Mustang Disc Brake Pedal Pad

Early Style Mustang Disc Brake Pedal Pad.  Note lack of groove for stainless steel trim.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

We have been waiting on this one quite some time.  It is the Rubber Pedal Pad for the '65 Mustang and GT350 Shelby.  This is the one with the "DISC BRAKE" designation.  It is also the earlier version without the groove around the outer edge for the stainless steel trim that was used on the pads on Pony (or Deluxe) interior equipped Mustangs.

I've done a lot of research to try to determine how long these early style disc brake pedal pads were used on the Mustangs.  Frankly, what I have observed was pretty surprising.  I have found these early style brake and clutch pedal pads on '65 Mustangs built up to July of 1965.  That is very near the end of the 1965 Mustang production.

These observations have been mainly on 1965 and early 1966 (Carryover) GT350 Shelbys.  All of these cars were built in the San Jose Ford assembly plant.

This is a rather difficult item to research, because many pads have been replaced on cars over the years.  If they were replaced, they were always replaced with the later style disc brake pedal pad with the groove around the outer edge.  In over 30 years of selling parts, I've never had a brand new Ford early style disc brake pedal pad.

Early (one of the first 100 or so) 1965 GT350 with early style Disc Brake Pedal Pad and Early Style Accelerator Pedal Pad.  Sorry, the Clutch Pedal Pad is missing on this particular car.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com
Second Batch 1965 GT350 with early style Disc Brake Pedal Pad, early Clutch Pedal Pad and Later Style (with groove) Accelerator Pedal Pad.  These cars were built around the end of Feb. 1965.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

Another interesting observation is the fact that the accelerator pedals on the some of the same cars with the early brake and clutch pads are the later style accelerator pedal with the groove.  Speaking only from observations of '65 GT350's, the first batch of about 100 or so cars (built by Ford around Dec. of  '64) have all of the early pedal pads, including the accelerator pedals.  The GT350's built after this appear to have the early clutch and disc brake pedal pads but the later accelerator pedals.

I'm certainly interested in any observations that our readers have.

Oh, by the way, here are some part numbers:

3M 8578 Strip Caulking Cord

3M #8578 Strip-Calk
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com
The 3M Black Strip Caulking Cord (Strip-Calk) is a great product for use during your Mustang restoration.  It is a soft, non-hardening caulking material that can easily be thumbed into place and smoothed with a finger.  It has a high temperature resistance and is even paintable.
3M #8578 Strip-Calk
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

It comes in a box of 12 inch long strips with 60 feet total.  You are probably thinking, "I will never use this much on one Mustang restoration!"  You may be surprised though.  It can be used for installation of lots of parts on a Mustang as original - gas tank, metal drain hole covers, roof side rail channel, fenders, heater motor, step plates, etc.  This stuff is everywhere!

Our part number is WS90.

Mustang Door Weatherstrip

1965 and 1966 Door Weatherstrip - Pair for RH and LH side.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

Monday, we posted about the new trunk weatherstrip that just came in.

Today, we have a quick post about some new Mustang Door Weatherstripping.  We previously had imported versions of the 65-66 Mustang Door WS and 67-68 Mustang Door WS.

1967 and 1968 Door Weatherstrip - Pair for RH and LH side.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com
Our new parts are for these applications, but they are Made in the USA.  Like the trunk weatherstrip, we have found the USA versions to be more pliable than the imported versions.  This allows for easier door closing and better fit.

The new part numbers are
WS-321  65-66 Mustang Door Weatherstrip-Made in USA

WS-331  67-68 Mustang Door Weatherstrip-Made in USA

Like all of our door weatherstripping, these are sold in pairs to do the LH and RH sides.

If you don't have a 1965-68 Mustang, no problem!  We have the 69-70 Mustang and 71-73 Mustang Door Weatherstrip sets also...and they are both Made in the USA with the same attention to detail and fit as the ones listed above.

Just the Details...1965-66 Mustang Rear Valances

Original assembly line Mustang rear valance with oval mounting holes.

Ford NOS Mustang rear valance with round mounting holes.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

Original assembly line Mustang rear valance with oval mounting holes.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

This is one of these "geeky" posts about those little tiny details that I like to learn about on '65 and '66 Mustangs.

Original assembly line Mustang rear valance with oval mounting holes.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

The original, assembly line Mustang rear valance had slotted, oval mounting holes.  I have found that the Ford NOS (service part) valances just have round holes and the reproductions are the same.  It is a possibility that the really early Ford parts had the oval holes, but I've never seen one.

Date stamping on original 65-66 Mustang rear valance.  This particular stamping reads "12  8  2C."  The "12" represents December.  "8" is the day of the month.  "2C" may have been a shift number.  The year was not used.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

Like most all sheet metal on a Mustang, the rear valance was also stamped with a date.

Mustang Trunk Lid Weatherstripping

1965-70 Mustang Coupe and Convertible Trunk Lid Weatherstrip.
www.VriginiaClassicMustang.com

The Weatherstrip that is used on the trunk door on a Mustang may seem like a simple item, but it is quite important.  Number one is the fact that virtually every single Mustang needs this part replaced during restoration.

We have a complete line of 1964 1/2-73 Mustang Trunk WS.  We just added a new one to our inventory that does not even appear in our brand new 2012 Mustang Parts and Accessories Print Catalog.

This one is the new WS-191 1964 1/2-70 Mustang Trunk Lid Weatherstrip for the Coupe and Convertible-Made in USA.  This one gives you an alternative to our WS-19 Imported version of this same Mustang trunk weatherstrip.  It is more pliable than the imported version.

www.VriginiaClassicMustang.com
While we are on the subject of trunk weatherstripping, we will mention that all of our trunk weatherstripping images have been updated on our web site.  We will also mention that all of the others are Made in the USA.  The images show the correct cross-section of each part.  This way you get the proper seal along with the correct authenticity.

Customer Car Feature - 1966 GT350H Shelby Clone

1966 Shelby GT350H Clone.

We always love to get emails and pictures of our customers' cars.  Here is the latest images we received from a customer in California of his 1966 GT350H Shelby clone Mustang.

1966 Shelby GT350H Clone.

Here is a little bit about my Mustang.  I bought it in 1978 for $550.  I always liked the 2+2 body style.  It was in OK shape so I spent some time fixing it up, and it became my daily driver.

I live in California and they have strict smog laws.  In the late 80's I was not able to pass the smog tests because I could not find the smog air injector tubes and mine had rusted out.  They offered to give me $1000 to junk the car (a California law to get smog producers off the road).  I liked the car to much to let it go to the junk yard, so I took it home and parked it thinking that some day I'll be able to get it smog legal.  It sat under a car cover for many years and then California passed a law that said that pre 1972 cars did not have to pass the smog test and could legally be driven on the road.  I decided that I would rebuild the car as a Shelby clone and spent the last 5 years working on it.

1966 Shelby GT350H Clone.
A friend told me about Virginia Classic Mustang and gave me a catalog.  I would say that about 90% of the parts I bought for the rebuild came from  Virginia Classic Mustang.  I rebuilt the engine using Keth Black pistons, GT40 heads, Comp cam, roller tapits, Edelbrock intake, Holley 750 street eliminator, Pertronics ignition, JBA headers and Flow master dual exhaust system with H-pipe. I also installed an oil cooler to help keep it cool.  Thanks for the great support from Virginia Classic Mustang.

Mustang Power Steering Pumps - Eaton Pump vs. Ford Pump

The Eaton Power Steering Pump on a Mustang has a separate pump and reservoir configuration.  Please note that  originally the reservoir was painted Argent (silver).
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

We receive a lot of email with good questions about all kinds of Mustang stuff.  A customer recently was asking how to tell the difference between the Eaton Power Steering Pump and the Ford Power Steering Pump on Mustangs.  I thought this would make a great little Blog post.

The Eaton Power Steering Pumps were used on the 1964 1/2 and early production 1965 Mustangs.  Ford then switched over to what is known as the "Ford" Power Steering Pump.  We are not going to be concerned in this post about Concours detailing or anything like that.  We are just focusing here on how to tell the difference between the two pumps.

The Eaton Power Steering Pump on a Mustang with factory air conditioning had a remote mounted reservoir.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

We will mention that the Eaton Power Steering Pump would have originally had a Argent (silver) reservoir, rather than black like the one shown in our picture.  There is also an image here of the Eaton Pump on a factory air conditioning equipped Mustang.  You will note the remote reservoir on the pump.

Here is a picture of a 1965-66 Mustang Ford power steering pump. This particular one has the slanted neck to clear the air conditioning compressor on a factory air conditioning equipped Mustang.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

The Ford Pump is also pictured.  This particular one, as noted in the caption, is one with the tilted or slanted neck to clear the air conditioning compressor.  It also should be noted that starting in 1967, the filler neck is smaller in diameter and used a different filler cap.
