Just the Details...1967 Shelby GT500 Restoration

It's been a while since we have posted about the 1967 Shelby GT500 in the shop at Maple Hill Restoration.  If you missed the last post, click here to check it out.

Honestly, it's not really a restoration. This is a really nice, original paint car. The owner wants to maintain the majority of the car's originality, while making it a super dependable driver. Of course, some restoration is involved, but a lot of this "restoration" is more about "clean up."

The latest step in the project involve removing the rear suspension, cleaning it up, checking out the rear end and the factory markings, and installing new gaskets, bearings, and seals.

1965-66 Mustang and Shelby GT350 Side Scoop Set. We now have new and improved side scoops that fit great! Now you can confidently purchase these to replace the missing or heavily damaged scoops on even the finest 1966 Shelby restoration. They are also a great addition to any '65-66 Mustang.

These concours reproduction side scoops are exact replicas of the scoops originally equipped on '66 Shelby GT350s. They are made from new tooling using hand laid fiberglass and finished in a smooth white primer ready for prep and paint. Unlike the light weight economy reproductions, these scoops are made thicker like the originals to provide maximum durability and a sturdy mounting surface.

They can be riveted on like the originals or bonded on for owners who don't want to drill holes in their quarter panels.

We have these again! Exact copy of the original brake hose bracket for a '65 and '66 Mustang (or Shelby) with factory dual exhaust.

In 1965 and 1966, Mustangs equipped with factory dual exhaust used a different rear brake hose than the single exhaust cars, so the hose would not interfere with the exhaust. Not only was the brake hose unique, but the mounting location was also different. These factory dual exhaust cars were built with a unique bracket mounted to the floor pan.

Our original supplier quit making them, so we decided to have them made ourselves. They are made of heavy gauge steel, like the originals.

Shelbys and Mustangs at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in Chicago

The Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals is really a fantastic show. If you have never attended, you may want to make plans to attend next November. The show draws over 550 of the best and rarest Shelbys, Mustangs, and Bosses in the country. Of course, there a lots of other muscle cars and Corvettes to round out this really cool event.

This year's show included the most significant race GT350 in history - 5R002. The same owner displayed the super rare, 1 of 4, 1966 Shelby Convertible. There were barn finds to super low mileage original cars to gorgeously restored examples.

New Mustang Parts! Fuel Filler Hoses

The rubber filler neck hoses for gas tanks on Mustangs alway need replacement, and now we have ones Made in the USA! This particular version is an exact reproduction of the 1969-70 style, but can easily be used on earlier Mustangs by simply trimming it ('65-66 versions are shorter than later models.)

We also still have the import versions that are trimmed for the exact year models. Don't forget the clamps!

Just the Details...1966 Shelby GT350 Mustang Restoration

Today, we have more pictures from the restoration of 1966 Shelby 6S033. If you missed the last post, click here to check it out.

On the '66 Shelbys, Shelby American cut out the sheet metal that held in the quarter window louvers in order to install plexiglass quarter windows. This involved using an aluminum trim on the outside with plastic trim panels on the inside.

The original outer aluminum trim from 6S033 was sent off to be re-anodized. The original plexiglass side pieces were scratched and cloudy. We really wanted to use the originals. They are curved and fit great. I personally thought they were just too rough to use, but Jeremy at Maple Hill Restoration, who is doing the restoration on the car, definitely proved me wrong. After carefully sanding with a progression of various grits of sandpaper, then polishing, the original windows were super clear!

Another surprise came as we were gathering up the original interior quarter trim pieces for the window. The original interior trim panel for the window was taken out of the Mustang when it arrived at Shelby American for trimming and then re-installation when the plexiglass windows were installed. The panels were marked with the serial number of the car that they were removed from. The original ones from 6S033 were from 6S180 though! So, we aren't really sure why they marked them in the first place!  Check out the pictures of the original markings.
