65-66 Mustang Heater Delete

1965 and 1966 Mustang Heater Delete
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com
All 1965 and 1966 Mustangs came standard with the heater and defroster assembly.  So, did you have to get your Mustang with one?  Well, you could opt out and get the heater delete "option".  When you deleted the heater, you received a credit for not getting this piece of "standard equipment."

I've found that having the "heater delete" is quite rare and was usually reserved for Mustangs ordered in Hawaii, south Florida or another very warm climate.  Of course, when it was deleted so was the defroster, so some folks may have regretted the decision!  Mustangs specifically ordered to be converted to race cars sometimes had the heater deleted for weight savings.

I've always been a bit fascinated by the heater delete, so I dug my original pieces out of storage and shot these pictures to share.

The top picture shows the complete kit.  I also think that the heater delete Mustangs may have received "covers" for the holes for defroster ducts located beside the dash speaker hole.  I believe these covers were originally made out of the same material as the cardboard glove box.  They are not pictured above.

The kit consisted of the following:

  • Caps for the water pump and intake elbow where the heater hoses would have been connected.
  • Plastic dash plate to cover the hole in the dash where the heater chrome bezel and controls would have been located.
  • Plastic plugs for the heater hose holes in the firewall.
  • Metal stamped block off plate for the hole in the firewall where the heater motor would be located.
  • The RH (passenger side) fresh air duct and door assembly.
  • J-Bolts for attachment of above.

Also the "knock out" areas in the firewall insulation mat where the heater box assembly and heater hoses would have been located remained in place.

The above image shows both the front and rear view of the plastic block off plate for the dash on a 65-66 heater delete equipped Mustang.

The images below show different views of the RH (passenger side) fresh air duct assembly.

Just the Details...Rebuilding a 65-66 Mustang Heater Box

Here is the finished Mustang heater box.  See below for more information.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

The work continues on the restoration of 6S033, our Carryover '66 GT350 Shelby.  Today, we will look at the super nice restoration of the heater box.  This work was performed by Jeremy at Maple Hill Restoration.  We want to also thank Jeremy for the great pictures.

www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

The original heater box had the date stamp of Y5FC.  We are not sure about the "Y", but the "5" indicates 1965, the "F" is June, and the "C" may be the third week.  This is right in line with the production date for this particular Mustang.

Most of these fiberglass heater boxes are broken at the indentations for the clips that hold the two halves together.

These areas were carefully filed in preparation for repair.

Small pieces of fiberglass cloth were laid in these previously broken and chipped areas.

After the fiberglass cured, Jeremy filed the area back to it's original shape to hold the clip.  The area was finally touched up with paint for an exact match to the original gray color.  Even upon close inspection, the repair is undetectable.  Check out the rest of the pictures below for the complete process of the restoration from painting the doors, to reassembly, and to finally restamping the date code.

Mustang Heater Plenum

65-68 Mustang Heater Plenum
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

With the nasty weather here at Virginia Classic Mustang, I thought it would be a good time to talk about Heater Plenums.

Just about every 65-68 Mustang needs a new Heater Plenum.  The original plenums were constructed of a pressed board material that just cannot hold up over a long period of time.  Original heater plenums are usually torn and warped from water/antifreeze damage.  This Plenum directs the air flow to either the defroster hose to the windshield or to the floor.

65-68 Mustang Heater Plenum
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

The Mustang Heater Plenums that we handle are molded from ABS plastic.  They come in a dark gray color to replicate the color of the original cardboard plenum.  They feature the correct bracket, grommets for the flapper door rod, and a metal flapper door with pads.  They are a tremendous improvement over the original cardboard Heater Plenum.  The price is also incredibly reasonable.  Order our part number IN-546.

While you are replacing the heater plenum, it is always a good idea to replace the Heater Foam inside the larger heater box that houses the Heater Core.

Don't forget our 10% Discount Coupon Code.  There is still some time left to save on those Mustang Parts that you didn't get for Christmas.

Also don't forget to "like" Virginia Classic Mustang on Facebook!

69-70 Mustang Heater Hose Firewall Grommets - Set of 2

Here is another one of those cool detail items that probably every single 1969 and 1970 Mustang needs.  These are the 1969 and 1970 Mustang rubber heater hose grommets that fit at the firewall. These grommets were originally installed on Mustangs in the firewall holes to seal against the heater hoses. They also protect the hoses from damage or cutting from the metal.

These grommets are made exactly like the originals using the original Ford Blue Prints.

Sold as set of 2 for one car.  Our Part Number is IN-5531 - Click here to order.
