1965 High Performance Mustang Convertible

1965 Mustang 289 HiPo Convertible Engine with 3 x 2 (Tri-power) induction system, Cobra Open Letter Valve Covers, and Cobra Finned Aluminum Oil Pan.  All images ©Virginia Classic Mustang Inc

We have not had an update on our '65 HiPo Mustang Convertible lately.  We have been just working on some small details, and we are now ready to set the engine and transmission.  In fact, that will probably be done tomorrow.

In the meantime, we wanted to take some pictures of the engine all put together before some pieces get taken off for the final installation.  If you have been following along with our posts about this K code Mustang restoration, you know that we chose to take a bit of an unconventional route with some of the engine bolt ons.

We had a 3 x 2 (tri-power) Ford induction system with September 1964 dated carb's that has been under our workbench for 10 or 15 years.  We thought it was time to do something with it.  Going along with the same theme, we opted for the Cobra "roadster" finned aluminum oil pan and the popular Buddy Bar Cobra "open letter" valve covers.

It will be cool to finally get the engine in the car where it belongs.

SAAC Shelby Registry - 1965 1966 1967 - 4th Edition - 2011.  Now available as our part number LT58 at http://www.virginiaclassicmustang.com/SAAC-SHELBY-REGISTRY-1965-1966-1967-4TH-EDITION-2011-P198686.aspx   All images ©Virginia Classic Mustang Inc
The latest edition of the Shelby American Automobile Club's (SAAC) World Registry, dedicated to 1965-1966-1967 Shelbys, is now available.  It is our part number LT58, and you can order it by clicking here.

It has been 14 years since the last registry was printed and in that time SAAC has compiled a stunning amount of new information and has dug even deeper into the production history of these cars. It is no wonder owners and enthusiasts refer to SAAC's registry as "The Bible."
Printed in hardcover, and 1,350 pages thick, this book has the serial number and individual history of every Shelby Mustang built in 1965, 1966 and 1967. Also included are separate, detailed chapters on competition cars, prototypes, drag cars, unique models and Shelby-built Trans-Am notchbacks.
The book contains 1,315 black and white photos. Said the book's editor, Rick Kopec, "If there's anything that's not in this book, it's not worth knowing."

There are chapters on Shelby values, how to buy a Shelby, fakes and frauds, the Carroll Shelby School of High Performance Driving, the Terlingua Racing Team and much more. Appendix pages include paint codes, stripe dimensions, serial number locations, a list of mechanical components, explanation of DSO codes and a glossary of terms unique to these cars. But wait! There's more! A list of every unique part for each year Shelby, a specification page for each separate model, factory technical service bulletins, homologation papers, accurate production figures, production statistics and an index of past owners.

The club's registrars: Howard Pardee (1965-66), Greg Kolasa (Hertz), Dave Mathews (1967) and Gary Underwood (Trans-Am notchbacks) have contributed information, including individual histories on each car, from their voluminous files.
