Mustang Power Steering Pumps - Eaton Pump vs. Ford Pump

The Eaton Power Steering Pump on a Mustang has a separate pump and reservoir configuration.  Please note that  originally the reservoir was painted Argent (silver).
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

We receive a lot of email with good questions about all kinds of Mustang stuff.  A customer recently was asking how to tell the difference between the Eaton Power Steering Pump and the Ford Power Steering Pump on Mustangs.  I thought this would make a great little Blog post.

The Eaton Power Steering Pumps were used on the 1964 1/2 and early production 1965 Mustangs.  Ford then switched over to what is known as the "Ford" Power Steering Pump.  We are not going to be concerned in this post about Concours detailing or anything like that.  We are just focusing here on how to tell the difference between the two pumps.

The Eaton Power Steering Pump on a Mustang with factory air conditioning had a remote mounted reservoir.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

We will mention that the Eaton Power Steering Pump would have originally had a Argent (silver) reservoir, rather than black like the one shown in our picture.  There is also an image here of the Eaton Pump on a factory air conditioning equipped Mustang.  You will note the remote reservoir on the pump.

Here is a picture of a 1965-66 Mustang Ford power steering pump. This particular one has the slanted neck to clear the air conditioning compressor on a factory air conditioning equipped Mustang.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

The Ford Pump is also pictured.  This particular one, as noted in the caption, is one with the tilted or slanted neck to clear the air conditioning compressor.  It also should be noted that starting in 1967, the filler neck is smaller in diameter and used a different filler cap.

New Correct Mustang Power Steering Hoses

1965-66 Mustang Power Steering Pressure Hose.  www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

Two new Mustang Power Steering Hoses recently arrived here at Virginia Mustang.

One is the 1965-66 Mustang Power Steering Pressure Hose. This hose is for use on cars equipped with the Ford (as opposed to the early Eaton) PS Pump. This is a very nice reproduction made by Scott Drake Mustang Parts. Original details were copied to produce an authentic reproduction.  Our part number is SU7921.

The other is  the 1967-68 Mustang Power Steering Pressure Hose. This PS Hose is for the 5/16 inch Pressure Port (1/2 inch fitting at valve). This is also a very nice reproduction made by Scott Drake Mustang Parts. Original details were copied, including the spiral metal covering.  Our part number is SU1182.

1967-73 Mustang Power Steering Cap with Dipstick

Our new 67-73 Mustang Power Steering Caps now have the FoMoCo Logo and are available in both chrome and zinc plating.  The zinc plating was the original finish, but the chrome one sure makes a nice dress up item!

The zinc plated one is our Part Number SU-102.  The chrome one is SU-1021.

Powering Steering Hose Protector Sleeve

Here is another neat detail part. This is the oil resistant sponge rubber sleeve that fits over the power steering hose to protect it from rubbing against other components.

It can be used on any Mustang power steering hose to prevent damage from rubbing. Original equipment on 1969-71 Mustangs with the following engines: Boss 302, 429 and 428CJ and all Ford cars with a power steering oil cooler.

These are exact reproductions of the original. The 20 inch length is enough to do all cars. Cut to fit as different lengths were used on each model in different locations.

Order part number SU1181.

67-70 Power Steering Hoses-Exact Style

We now have the exact style 67-70 Mustang Short Power Steering Hoses. These are the hoses that fit from the power steering cylinder to the control valve. These are really nice. Each hose has unique bends on the end of each hose. Each hose is also a different length like the original. These will fit much better than the previous "replacement style" hoses that used to be the only ones available. Please keep in mind that the replacement style hoses are still available and are cheaper if you would rather purchase them. Please order Part Number SU1231.

Control Valve to Cylinder Power Steering Hoses

We have not had these short power steering hoses for a while for your Mustang. These are the correct ones with the different bends on each hose like the original. The ones that we have had-SU830-are a replacement style with both hose being identical. They will work, but these correct ones work much better.

Order part number SU831. They are in stock now!

Mustang Power Steering Cylinders

Yesterday, we talked about having a choice between different quality levels of the same part. Here is another great example-the Mustang Power Steering Cylinder. There is an imported reproduction offered that is only really correct for the 1967-70 model.

For just a bit more money, you can buy a much better USA Made cylinder. It is available in the correct 1965-66 size and the 1967-70 size. We sell lots more of the USA Made ones than the imported ones. We also have virtually no returns on these nicer parts.
Also, don't forget the boot kit. This is one of our most popular parts.
