New Shelby Mustang GT350 Book

We have been waiting for this book for a long time!

We have it now, and it was worth the wait!!

Lots has been written about the legendary Shelby Mustang GT350, but this book is quite different. It contains perspective, information, and pictures that have never before been published.

In fact, we were quite honored to contribute some vintage images from our personal collection for use in this book. The entire book is full of fantastic, never before published, vintage images.

The story is told by Chuck Cantwell. Chuck was the engineer and project manager behind the Mustang GT350. If you have ever met Chuck at one of the many car events that he attends, you know that he is a great guy and still shares our passion for these very cool cars. Honestly, this makes the book just that much better.

Greg Kolasa, a Shelby American Automobile Club Registrar, also put this book together with Chuck. Greg has written other great Shelby related publications such as The Definitive Shelby Mustang Guide: 1965-1970.

Simply put, if you are a fan of the Shelby Mustang GT350, you need this book on your shelf.

It is now in stock, and you can order it by clicking here.

Below is the publisher's description:

When the Ford Motor Company needed a new car aimed at the youth market of the 1960s, it created the instantly-popular Mustang. When it decided to turn the Mustang into a true sports car it turned to Carroll Shelby. And when Shelby needed an engineer to develop what would become the classic Mustang GT350 he hired Chuck Cantwell.

In Shelby Mustang GT350: My Years Designing, Testing And Racing Carroll’s Legendary Mustangs Cantwell delivers a unique first-hand account of his years at the Shelby American company. Working alongside Shelby and a dedicated team, he succeeded in producing a car that was an immediate success on the race track and an iconic muscle car whose reputation remains unmatched after more than half a century.

When Shelby hired Chuck from General Motors, he got more than an experienced project engineer. He also got an accomplished driver, a three-time SCCA Division class champion in cars that he prepared himself. That background helped Chuck engineer solutions for the Mustang and accurately evaluate them, even in competition. The Shelby GT350 won the SCCA’s B- Production National Championship three years in a row, and Ford won two consecutive Trans-Am Manufacturers Championships in Mustangs prepared and campaigned by Shelby American.

On a subject as popular as the Shelby Mustang GT350 fresh, definitive information is hard to come by, but that is exactly what Chuck provides. He shares fresh technical details, never-before-heard anecdotes, and corrects popular misconceptions about the GT350's origins and development. Chuck also covers his work on later cars like the GT500, as well as his critical role with the Shelby racing team in the Trans-Am series. And his month-by-month narrative is supported by scores of photographs (including many rare images from his own collection and those of other Shelby insiders) as well as technical drawings and company memos. Additional background information, data, and details are provided by co-author Greg Kolasa, an automotive historian who has spent decades researching and writing about Carroll Shelby's cars.

Shelby Mustang GT350 is a vivid, fact-filled account of how the man Carroll Shelby dubbed "Mr. GT350" led the effort to create an American automotive legend. It's precisely the book that Shelby Mustang owners and other enthusiasts have been waiting for.

Chuck Cantwell - Project Engineer Shelby American

Chuck Cantwell's 1966 GT350
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

Chuck Cantwell was the Project Engineer for the '65 GT350 and other vehicles back starting in 1965 at Shelby American. Chuck has some great stories from back in the day. If you ever have a chance to meet him at a show, try to make a point to do it. He's certainly one of our favorite people that we have met over the years.

Chuck, along with Shelby historian, Greg Kolasa will be releasing a brand new book about Shelby American history soon. There will be many never before seen pictures, some of which we supplied.

We are really looking forward to this book and plan to have it available for purchase when it is released.

Check out this interview with Chuck from the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals back in November.

New Book! Shelby Mustang Fifty Years

Shelby Mustang Fifty Years Book by Colin Comer.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com
If you own or just are a fan of Shelby Mustangs, you need this book!  Perhaps, you know someone who is an owner or a fan...this would make a great gift.

It's the latest book from author, Colin Comer, and it's another great one.

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of America's premier performance car!

From the original Shelby Mustang GT350 to today's 1,000 horsepower GT500, Carroll Shelby, Shelby American, and the Ford Motor Company have defined high-performance with their Shelby Mustangs. Shelby built his Mustangs from 1965 until 1970, at a time when it seemed that the muscle car was a dying breed. Then an odd thing happened: people began to realize the classic nature of the car almost as soon as Shelby stopped building them. After a much-too-long hiatus, in 2006 Carroll Shelby was back with Ford and production of new Shelby Mustangs began for the first time in 36 years. Today, Shelby Mustangs of all eras remain at the top of almost every gearhead's list and with good reason-they are America's premier do-it-all pony car.

Shelby Mustang Fifty Years is a celebration of these magnificent machines and covers every iteration from the raw 1965 GT350s to today's Shelby 1000 monster and the men that made it all happen. Created in cooperation with the Carroll Hall Shelby Trust and officially licensed by Carroll Shelby Licensing, Inc., Shelby Mustang Fifty Years is lavishly illustrated with rare, historic photography and modern color images to chronicle the story of these amazing cars, from the initial collaboration with Ford to today's record-setting high-tech muscle cars.

The foreword and tribute to Carroll Shelby by the "Father of the Mustang" Lee Iacocca rounds out this love note to America's premier performance car. No Mustang fan will want to miss it.

Both of these books are considered the "Bibles" of Shelbys.

It has been 14 years since the last Registry was printed and in that time SAAC has compiled a stunning amount of new information and has dug even deeper into the production history of these unique cars.

Printed in hardcover, and 1,471 pages thick, this book has the serial number and individual history of every Shelby Mustang built in 1968, 1969, and 1970.  Also included are separate, detailed chapters on competition cars, prototypes, drag cars, and unique models.

Appendix pages include paint codes, serial number locations, a list of mechanical components, explanation of DSO codes and a glossary of terms unique to these cars.  But wait!  There's more!  A list of unique parts for each year, specification pages, production figures, production statistics, and an index of past owners.

If you own a Shelby Mustang, are thinking about buying one, or just love the cars, you absolutely have to have one of these books.

The Mustang GT/CS Recognition Guide & Owner's Manual by Paul M. Newitt and licensed by Ford is a hardbound, full color 224 page detailed story of the limited-edition 1968 Ford Mustang--which was created just for California.

The story continues with the marketing plan by J.Walter Thompson and California's Ford Dealer's Association to bring this Mustang to market in the spring of 1968. A detailed account of the GT/CS variant, the "High Country Special," sold in the Denver sales district is also included.

Detailed production statistics, rare factory photos, authentication, options, accessories, specific part descriptions and comprehensive Concours restoration information are covered, along with the complete stories of the Shelby prototype coupes "Little Red," and the EXP-500 "Green Hornet."

Where can I find the casting number (and what does it mean) on my engine block?
Which is the correct water pump pulley for my car's engine?
Which water temperature sending unit was originally used in my 1964 1/2 Mustang?

www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

WOW!  We just received our first shipment of the new hardcover book - Mustang:  Fifty Years - Celebrating America's Only True Pony Car.  Since starting Virginia Classic Mustang over 30 years ago, we have seen lots of Mustang books come and go.  There have been (and still are) some great books available, but this is just one of those absolute "must have" books for any Mustang enthusiast.

I just quickly spent a few minutes flipping through the book, and it looks fantastic, just as I suspected.  There are lots of cool images (over 400!!) that most folks have never seen before along with unique information about the history of the Ford Mustang from the concept models all the way up to the current model.  I cannot wait to just sit down for a few hours and read it cover to cover!

Another great thing about this book is its author, Donald Farr.  Donald has been involved in the Mustang hobby pretty much from the beginning, and he is, of course, well known as the long time editor of Mustang Monthly Magazine.  He's a good friend of ours, extremely knowledgeable Mustang enthusiast, and one of the nicest guys you could meet. He's done a great job with this book, and you won't want to miss it.

Here is the description from the publisher:

If there is one thing Ford Enthusiasts have learned over the years, deciphering which parts work with which engines is a far more difficult task with Fords than with many other engine families. Will Cleveland heads fit on my Windsor block? What is the difference between the two distinct families of big-blocks? What heads are available for use on my small block? Can I gain compression by using older model cylinder heads? Which pulleys should I be able to use on my engine swap? These are just a few examples of common questions Ford fans have. These, and many other questions are examined in this all-new color update of a perennial best-seller.

Thoroughly researched, High-Performance Ford Parts Interchange includes critical information on Ford's greatest V-8 engines and goes into great detail on the highly desirable high-performance hardware produced throughout the '60s ,'70s and '80s. By combining some of the best parts from various years, some great performance potential can be unlocked in ways Ford never offered to the general public. Following the advice in High Performance Ford Parts Interchange, these engine combinations can become reality. You will find valuable information on cranks, blocks, heads, cams, pulleys, intakes, rods, pistons, and even accessories to guide you through your project.

Author George Reid has once again done extensive research to accurately deliver a thorough and complete collection of Ford V-8 information in this revised edition. Knowing what internal factory engine parts can be used across the wide range of production Ford powerplants is invaluable to the hot rodder and swap meet/Ebay shopper. A must-have for every Ford enthusiasts library.

Click here to order the book.

Oh, and here is the "official" description of the book from the publisher:

During the 1960s and 1970s, all the major Detroit manufacturers made legendary muscle cars, and Ford was no exception. Shelby Mustangs, Cobra Jet Mach 1s, big-block and Hi-PO GTs, Boss and Talladega prototypes, K codes, S codes, and R codes, all familiar terms to Ford performance enthusiasts. Shockingly, even with how popular many of these models were, there are still long-lost examples turning up in barns, garages, backyards, and yes, pastures.

Some of these lost Mustangs and Fords were forgotten by owners, shuffled between family members, or simply parked to become non-descript garage fixtures. Some have lived hard lives on the street and in competition, and then been neglected and abandoned. Many of these Mustangs and Fords are among the most valuable and collectible cars Ford has ever built. These automotive jewels have been waiting for a dedicated enthusiast to rescue them from obscurity. In order to find these rare rides, collectors have had to do extensive research, fact checking, searching off-the-beaten-path locales, and make hundreds of phone calls.

As the automotive Indiana Jones, Jerry Heasley has been tracking down and documenting the stories of the rarest and most sought-after Mustang and high-performance Ford rescue stories for years. In this follow-up to the top-selling Jerry Heasley's Rare Finds, Heasley has built a collection of his finest stories, including the 1969 Boss styling prototype that was owned by Ford stylist Larry Shinoda, the original 1967 Shelby Mustang prototype that would become several other test cars, and a rare 1965 Shelby GT350R.

New! The Definitive Shelby Mustang Guide: 1965-1970

The Definitive Shelby Mustang Guide:  1965-1970 by Greg Kolasa
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com
We were really excited to get this new book, The Definitive Shelby Mustang Guide:  1965-1970.  Our friend and Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) Registry Co-Author, Greg Kolasa has been working hard to put out this great, new book.

Check out the publisher's description:

All car enthusiasts know about Shelby Mustangs, but what really separates them from their production-line relatives? What really makes a Shelby a Shelby? This new book from Shelby American Auto Club (SAAC) historian and registrar Greg Kolasa details the specifics on the performance and appearance alterations with both descriptive text and superb photographs.

This book gives a detailed look at both the performance and styling characteristics of each year of the 1965-1970 Shelby Mustangs in text, photographs, and charts/graphs and clears up many myths and misconceptions surrounding these legendary pony cars. In addition to his firsthand knowledge, Kolasa relies heavily on factory documentation and interviews with Shelby American designers, engineers, stylists, fabricators, and race drivers to get the true, as-it-happened story of these phenomenal pony cars. Additionally, the cars included in the book were chosen specifically for their historical and technical "correctness."

The Definitive Shelby Mustang Guide: 1965-1970 will serve as the illustrated Shelby Mustang sourcebook for years to come. For Mustang and Shelby enthusiasts especially, but even for general automotive historians, no automotive library would be complete without it.

We just received these new books yesterday.  I think it is just one of those "must have" books for any Mustang Library.  It is our part number LT-171.

Here is the description from the publisher:

Author: Donald Farr Foreward by: Parnelli Jones Format: Hardcover, 160 pages

Of the legendary names in the history of the Ford Mustang, one stands apart: BOSS. Originally created to homologate the new Boss 302 engine and option package for SCCA Trans-Am racing, the Mustang Boss 302 debuted for the 1969 model year and was built in limited numbers for the street through 1970. Designed by the legendary Larry Shinoda, the Boss cars were easily distinguished from their less potent stablemates by their race-bred powerplant, standard front spoiler, and bold graphics.

For the 2012 model year, Ford has at long last revived the most revered of all Mustang models: BOSS. With a new racing counterpart and a modern street version that delivers more than 440 horsepower, the Boss is truly back!

To mark this historic occasion, Mustang historian Donald Farr has written a complete history of the Boss 302, from its late 1960s origins in Ford's boardrooms, through its Trans-Am successes and untimely demise in 1970 up to the conception and development of the spectacular new 2012 Mustang Boss 302. Packed with brilliant photography and first-hand accounts from the people who created the original Boss as well as the team that resurrected FordÆs most iconic Mustang, this is the story every Mustang enthusiast has been waiting to read!
Donald Farr has been on staff at Mustang Monthly Magazine for 30 years. In addition to his magazine work, Donald authored Mustang Boss 302: FordÆs Trans-Am Ponycar and co-wrote How to Restore Your Mustang with Mustang Monthly founder Larry Dobbs. He currently owns the 1966 Mustang GT that his grandfather purchased new.

Rufus Parnell "Parnelli" Jones is an American racing legend. As a driver, he has won races and championships in a wide variety of machinery, including sprint cars, midget cars, stock cars, off-road vehicles, sports cars, Trans-Am cars, and Indy cars. A winner of three Indy 500s (one as a driver, two as a car owner), among his many other career highlights was winning the 1970 Trans-Am Championship in a Mustang Boss 302.
