New Part! 65 GT350 Shelby Battery Cable and Trunk Bungee Cord Clamp

65 GT350 Shelby Battery Cable and Trunk Bungee Cord Clamp
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

The first 300 or so 1965 GT350 Mustang Shelbys were equipped with the battery mounted in the trunk. A special rubber coated clamp was used to secure the cable to the frame rail and floor pan as it was run from the front to the back of the car. These same clamps were used on the trunk floor to secure the bungee cord that hold downs the jack assembly.

Here at Virginia Classic Mustang, we now have these special clamps available. We made just a small run of these. Our part number is PE-1161. Please click here to see more and order.

1965 and 1966 Mustang Fastback Trunk Lids

1965-66 Mustang Trunk Lid.  This one is generally referred to as the "'66 style", but you may find that they were also installed on some very late production '65 cars...at least in the San Jose plant.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

Today, we want to look at the two different trunk lid configurations that are normally seen on 1965 and 1966 Mustangs.  The outside skin and shape are the same among the two styles.  The inside frame is where the difference is seen.

Generally, the "'66 style" has the round circles in the frame as shown above.  The below images shows what is normally referred to as the "'65 style".

It should be pointed out, that at least on the San Jose built Mustangs and Shelbys, you will find the later "'66 style" even on very late '65 production cars.  On GT350s, this transition occurred on the Carryover cars.  To learn more about the Carryover GT350s, visit www.CarryoverGT350.com.

While we are on the subject of trunk lids, take a look at some of the work from Jeremy at Maple Hill Restoration on the trunk lid for 1966 Shelby number 6S933.

1965 and 1966 Mustang Coupe and Convertible Trunk Lid Torsion Rod Set - New Part!

1965 and 1966 Mustang Coupe and Convertible Trunk Lid Torsion Rod / Spring Set - Pair
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com
We now have the torsion rods that hold up the trunk lid on the 65-66 Mustang Coupe and Convertible. These rods kind of act like springs in holding the weight of the trunk lid so it stays in an upright position when open.  Order part number SM-9101.

We also have the rubber sleeve for these (part number WS-24).  It mounts on one of the rods to keep metal to metal from rubbing together.

Keep in mind that these trunk torsion rods are available for other years and body styles listed below:

SM-9102   65-66 Mustang Fastback Trunk Lid Torsion Rod / Spring (only one used on a fastback)

SM-9571  67-68 Mustang Coupe and Convertible Torsion Rod / Spring Set of 2

Our part number is ER-233.  It is another great part made by Scott Drake Mustang Parts.

Just the Details...Early Mustang Trunk Boards

Early style trunk board in a June 1964 Dearborn built Mustang coupe.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

OK, just when you thought my Mustang "Just the Details..." posts could not get any geekier, Jeremy at Maple Hill Restoration comes up with this little observation.  There was actually a difference between the 64 1/2-early 65 Mustang trunk boards and the later ones.  As you can see in the images posted here, the earlier version is cut differently at the wheel house area.

It appears that the change was probably made to the larger notch to allow the trunk board to be installed a bit more easily.

The Mustang Trunk Board at the top of the image is the later style.  Note the larger "notch."
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

By the way, when we started looking at more original 65-66 Mustang trunk boards, we looked to see if they were cut so the rough side or the smooth side was up.  It seems that this is very random...some are cut so the rough side faces up, some are cut so the smooth side faces up.

The 64 1/2-early 65 Mustang Trunk Board has the smaller cut out/notch.

Mustang Ratchet Style Jack Handle Wrench

This is the reproduction of the early Mustang Ratcheting Jack Handle Wrench.  It features nice clear/silver zinc plating.  It is a very authentic reproduction of the original.

This is a close up view of the reproduction of the early Mustang Ratcheting Jack Handle Wrench.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

This is a view showing the "open ended" style handle on the reproduction of the early Mustang Ratcheting Jack Handle Wrench.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

This is not a new item, but I thought it deserved a Blog post.  The 1965-67 Mustang originally came with a ratchet style jack handle wrench.  It was a very weak design, and I always suggest only using one for "show."

There are several versions.  The earlier style has an "open end" handle.  The late style that appeared sometime in the '65 model run has a "closed end" handle.  There was also a style, that I think appeared later, with a straight, rather that angled as shown in these pictures, head.

Note the "closed" style handle on this Mustang Ratcheting Jack Handle Wrench.  This one appeared sometime during the 1965 model year production.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

The reproduction that we have is the earlier style "open end" handle Mustang Jack Wrench.  It is our part number ST-279.

Mustang Trunk Lid Weatherstripping

1965-70 Mustang Coupe and Convertible Trunk Lid Weatherstrip.
www.VriginiaClassicMustang.com

The Weatherstrip that is used on the trunk door on a Mustang may seem like a simple item, but it is quite important.  Number one is the fact that virtually every single Mustang needs this part replaced during restoration.

We have a complete line of 1964 1/2-73 Mustang Trunk WS.  We just added a new one to our inventory that does not even appear in our brand new 2012 Mustang Parts and Accessories Print Catalog.

This one is the new WS-191 1964 1/2-70 Mustang Trunk Lid Weatherstrip for the Coupe and Convertible-Made in USA.  This one gives you an alternative to our WS-19 Imported version of this same Mustang trunk weatherstrip.  It is more pliable than the imported version.

www.VriginiaClassicMustang.com
While we are on the subject of trunk weatherstripping, we will mention that all of our trunk weatherstripping images have been updated on our web site.  We will also mention that all of the others are Made in the USA.  The images show the correct cross-section of each part.  This way you get the proper seal along with the correct authenticity.

65-66 Fastback Trunk Rear Trim Screw Protector Tips

Plastic protector caps were placed over the trim screws that protrude into the trunk area from the interior of a 65-66 Mustang fastback.  These caps protect any items that may be placed in the trunk from possible damage that could be caused from the sharp ends of the screws.

Two different colors of caps were originally used.  Some cars received gray caps and some received an opaque clear/sort of white caps.  The gray caps have been available for several months and have been very popular and now the clear/white ones are available.

They are sold in sets of five.

65-66 Mustang Trunk Rear Trim Screw Protector Cap Set

Here is another detail part that I'm glad to see reproduced. The 65-66 Mustang Fastback rear trim was originally attached by some rather long chrome trim screws. The sharp points of these screws protrude into the tight trunk area on the Fastback.

Ford used plastic protector caps to screw on the pointy ends of these screws in order to protect any cargo that was stowed in the trunk.

Now the gray ones are available as our Part Number IN6861.

There are a total of 5 in the set. Below is a picture showing the installation of 3 of them in a '65 Fastback.
