Just the Details...1966 Shelby Mustang GT350

It's been a while since our last update on our '66 Shelby 6S1732 "clean up" project.  We aren't calling it a restoration, because it isn't.  This Shelby was purchased from an owner who maintained it very well for over 40 years.  I guess most folks would call it a barn find. Going by the current use (or over use) of that term, it probably really is a barn find.

Most "barn finds" remain in poor mechanical shape and consequently are unable to be driven.  There's also a trend of leaving the dirt on them.  Well, that's not really something we were interested in, but we did want to preserve lots of the originality of this Shelby.  We think that we were able to strike a nice balance, so the car will be quite enjoyable.

Jeremy at Maple Hill Restoration is handling the work, and it's running now and going back together quite nicely.  Check out the pictures.  We should have an update by the end of next week when we expect to have it completely together with the original interior back in the car also!

2021 GT350 Tour - The Keystone State Tour

Most of the GT350s arrived on Sunday afternoon for the week long driving event starting Monday morning.

The sixth GT350 Tour was recently held with our "home base" being The Hershey Resort in Hershey, PA. The Tour began in 2015 with just 13 early GT350s (14 total, counting the new, at the time, GT350 attending as a press car). There was no Tour in 2016, but with a new organizer, it was back in 2017 and has been an annual event since.

It's basically an annual "get-together" of incredible friends who just love these cars. It's evolved and grown over the years with the 2021 Tour hosting a whooping 30 GT350s! All of them being '65 and '66 models except for a lone '67 and '68.

We have been fortunate enough to attend every Tour, and this year's event was close enough to drive the old Green '66 (6S1732) through the back roads from Virginia to Hershey, PA. Our reliable '66 did not miss a beat as we drove 933 miles during the entire week. The mileage was a bit on the lower side this year just due to the huge number of cool visits that we made during the Tour. Those stops included the Yuengling Brewery, several private car collections, a scenic railway ride, and Clair Global.

Be sure to check out the pictures posted along with the captions for a bit more information. The planning is well under way for the 2022 GT350 Tour!

Just one of the several 4 speed Hertz GT350Hs in attendance. Amazing to have so many as there were only a total of 85 produced. This one was obviously prepped and ready to go!

There were only a total of 36 R Models built in 1965, and there was one on our GT350 Tour. This is 5R108.

50th Anniversary GT350 Tour

1966 Shelby GT350 6S1732 all clean before the rainy tour!
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

Here on the Blog, we have written about our "clean up restoration" of 1966 GT350 Shelby #6S1732. If you missed those posts, you can see the pictures and posts by clicking here.

We have been driving the car quite a bit this summer, but we were fortunate enough to join some friends for almost 600 miles over about 4 days during the 50th Anniversary GT350 Tour.

The Tour included eleven '65-66 GT350s, two '67s, and a new 2016 GT350. Even three straight days of rain didn't dampen folks' spirits. It was a fantastic time with cool cars and great people.

Enjoy the photos! Check out our Virginia Classic Mustang Facebook page for even more images.

Just the Details...1966 Shelby Mustang GT350

1966 Mustang Shelby GT350.  SFM6S1732

The "clean up" continues on our 66 Shelby (6S1732) at Maple Hill Restoration.  In case you have not been following our Blog posts, the last owner had this GT350 since 1972.  During that time, it was stored well and had been used sparingly.  He just maintained the car and kept every original part that was removed over the years.

Rather than performing a complete restoration, we wanted to preserve lots of the car's originality by just cleaning it up.  We originally did not plan to pull the engine, but the last owner painted the engine black and the only way to really repaint the blue properly was to remove the engine.  This also made it easier to clean the fender aprons.  They have now been gently cleaned and retain their original paint.

The removal of the grease and dirt from the floor revealed the original red sealer finish which, of course, will stay.

The engine appears to have never been apart and is in excellent condition.  Due to an oversize drain plug that was installed in the oil pan, we have removed the pan to repair the hole to its original size.  We also have had the original HiPo water pump rebuilt, and it will be re-installed.

Other parts and parts of the car that retain their original finish will be carefully cleaned and left as is.

Be sure to check out the captions on the pictures of the 289 HiPo engine flywheel, HiPo balancer and the Shelby floor pans for more details.  We will post more pictures soon!

The Shelby's original transmission cross member still has its original finish.

The 289 HiPo flywheel on the Shelby has a date casting of 5L4.  That's November 4, 1965 and is the earliest dated part on the car.

The original 289 HiPo harmonic balancer was painted black.

The Shelby's original HiPo harmonic balancer has an A6 (January 1966) stamping date.

The original 289 High Performance engine has 82K original miles.  It's never been apart and is super clean inside.

Here is a close up of the timing chain cover's date.  The 66, of course, represents 1966.  The one dot represents one month - January 1966.

Later in '66, the motor mounts used on the 289 HiPo were the same as other 289's.  These cleaned up very nicely and the original finish will remain.
