Just the Details...65-66 Mustang Door Hinges

I started these "Just the Details..." posts here a while back.  Some of them might be a bit "geeky" for some of our readers' tastes, and this post just might qualify.

Today, we will look at two different designs of door hinges used during the 1965-66 Mustang production.  The pictures explain it best, but the earlier design is a "straight cut" design and the later ones have a beveled edge as shown.  Please keep in mind that all of the NOS Ford Service Replacement door hinges for '65 and '66 Mustangs that I have seen are the later beveled design.  These door hinges were available several years ago and are often seen on previously restored cars.  This is just an important note to point out when trying to determine what your Mustang original came with.

Sometimes it is difficult to tell when changes like this took place, and this change is no exception.  We have found the "early" design on a January 1965 Dearborn production Mustang, and I suspect we may find them later than that.  We are still looking into this and would certainly welcome any feedback from our readers, and please keep in mind my note about the Ford Service Parts being the beveled design.

I think this is a great subject to bring up. Not only that but the differences in the bolt size 65 compared to 66> There are many little differences to consider and at times it is much better to rebuild the original hinges than going with reproduction replacements. It takes more effort and finesse but if you can rebuilt the originals and retain all your original hardware you'll be much better off. I've had many repop hinges that needed much "massaging" to come close to fitting like Ford hinges.
