Just the Details...1967 Shelby Mustang GT500

1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

If you have been following our Blog, you certainly remember our green 1966 Shelby (6S1732) that we purchased in Missouri.  It is a great original car, but just needed a "clean up" restoration. Honestly, it would be considered a "barn find".  While it is a great candidate for a full blown, killer, show restoration, we chose to clean it up, keep a ton of the original feel and parts, and get the car 100% functional and reliable.  This car is completed now, and while it's not going to win any trophies for shiny, perfect paint and brand new interior, it is really reliable, fun to drive, and appeals to enthusiasts who appreciate originality.  Click here to read some of the previous posts about the '66.

One of those guys who really appreciated the great work being performing on our '66 Shelby by Jeremy Turner at Maple Hill Restoration was a reader of our Blog here.  He just happened to own a gorgeous '67 Shelby GT500 that was in similar condition to our '66 GT350.  A few phone calls were made, and the '67 was on its way to Jeremy's shop for a similar "make over".

The owner wants the exact same result that we achieved with our '66, and boy does he have a great car to start with!!  It's a low mileage GT500 with lots of originality including original paint and interior.  Again, the plan is to retain a great deal of originality while making the car super reliable and enjoyable.

The first order of business was to evaluate the Shelby and get it running.  It was super cool that the original gas tank was still in place, but the pinholes in the bottom of the tank were not so cool.  It was pulled and replaced with one of our show quality gas tanks, just like in our '66 Shelby.

The underside of the car is completely rust free and beautiful.  A general clean up will be performed while keeping the original finishes just as Jeremy did with our '66.

Once the car was running, worn bearings were discovered in the engine, so the next order of business is pulling the engine for a complete rebuild.  Stay tuned!

The event was judged by Peter Brock, Jim Marietta, Ted Sutton, and some other original employees from the sixties heyday at Shelby American.

The First Shelby GT350 Mustang

5S003 - The First Shelby GT350 Mustang appears in the April 2015 edition of Hot Rod Magazine.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

Don't miss the April 2015 edition of Hot Rod Magazine.  Our good friend, Eric English has an article about a very cool Mustang owned by another one of our buddies, Mark Hovander.  It's not just any Mustang either!  It's actually the very first Mustang GT350 Shelby.

Also check out our video below.  It's from about 5 years ago at SAAC-35 when I drove 5S003 on the road tour in northern California.  That's when the car was still in R Model trim.  That was certainly an awesome day!

We have a picture of the car from that day at the bottom of this post.

1965 and 1966 Mustang Fastback Trunk Lids

1965-66 Mustang Trunk Lid.  This one is generally referred to as the "'66 style", but you may find that they were also installed on some very late production '65 cars...at least in the San Jose plant.
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com

Today, we want to look at the two different trunk lid configurations that are normally seen on 1965 and 1966 Mustangs.  The outside skin and shape are the same among the two styles.  The inside frame is where the difference is seen.

Generally, the "'66 style" has the round circles in the frame as shown above.  The below images shows what is normally referred to as the "'65 style".

It should be pointed out, that at least on the San Jose built Mustangs and Shelbys, you will find the later "'66 style" even on very late '65 production cars.  On GT350s, this transition occurred on the Carryover cars.  To learn more about the Carryover GT350s, visit www.CarryoverGT350.com.

While we are on the subject of trunk lids, take a look at some of the work from Jeremy at Maple Hill Restoration on the trunk lid for 1966 Shelby number 6S933.

If you read our Blog, you know that we love customer cars and especially like the early K Code Mustangs with the 289 HiPo engines.

Here are a few pictures of a customer's beautiful, black 1965 289 HiPo K Code Mustang Fastback.

Lots of parts from Virginia Classic Mustang, some help with wiring installation from another one of our customers, engine build by our local engine builder, Dusty of MaxFlow Motorsports, and engine prep and paint by Jeremy at Maple Hill Restoration.

Thanks for the pictures, Larry!  Your Mustang looks great, and we know it runs well!

We even have a picture of Dusty's son helping with the hook up of the engine on the dyno.
