65-66 Mustang Woodgrain Steering Wheel

1965 and 1966 Mustang equipped with the deluxe pony interior option came with a simulated woodgrain steering wheel that definitely added a sporty flair to the already stylish Mustang. This steering wheel was also available as a stand alone option in addition to being standard equipment on all 1966 Shelby GT350 Mustangs.

It is a given that the originals cracked and originals almost always have a small crack to a large gap in the plastic woodgrain. We've been in business for over 35 years and have seen quite a few "restorations" of these steering wheels. In our opinion, I've never seen an accurate or durable restoration.

The only real choice is to replace the steering wheel. There have also been a few reproductions available over the years (and still available),  This particular version has been improved since the last run, and we finally have a new batch in stock. Boy, are we impressed! The spokes look nice with the correct brushed finish and the woodgrain finish is very, very close to the originals that we have seen. This one comes complete with the horn ring, spacer, and horn contact rings. All you need is a cap, which we also have.

This wheel is a great choice for everything from a nice upgrade for a driver to a replacement on a trailered show car!

It looks like it needs a bit of work, but it appears as if it hasn't been "messed with" over the last 50 plus years. The original window sticker and even the original owner card is included.

Just the Details...1966 Shelby GT350 - The 289 HiPo Engine is Ready to Go!

Time is flying by!! It's been 4 months since our last Blog Post update on our 1966 Carryover Shelby restoration. If you missed that post, please click here to see it.

Expect to see more frequent posts soon, because Jeremy at Maple Hill Restoration is working hard on getting the Shelby together. While a lot of work still remains, lots of research and sub-assembly restoration have been completed. It's always great to get to this point in a restoration when you can actually see the results of all of the hard work!

The engine will be installed very soon, and that brings us to our Blog Post today. The engine was assembled with all components for our photo shoot. It's the original 289 HiPo from the Shelby with the Ford VIN stamped in the block. We will share the story soon, but the block was reunited with the Shelby soon after we purchased the car way back in 1999.

The engines in the GT350s featured the unique items that you see pictured here such as the Cobra Buddy Bar aluminum valve covers, the Cobra lettered finned aluminum oil pan, Tri-Y Headers, 715 cfm Holley carburetor, and the aluminum Cobra intake manifold. Of course, the engine started as a 289 High Performance model, so the larger harmonic balancer, dual point distributor, solid lifters, HiPo connecting rods, 4 blade fan, and special HiPo motor mounts were also included.

We also have a shot of the restored T-10M Borg Warner 4 speed transmission. This close ratio aluminum case transmission was used throughout 1965 and early 1966 GT350 production. These transmissions did not get stamped with the car VIN, but they were date coded. Later Blog Posts will feature many of these details.

65-66 Mustang Battery Tray with Top Holddown

Unless you purchase one of our exact reproduction Autolite Batteriesfor your Mustang, the replacement battery will not have the "ledge" on the lower side of the case as shown . This "ledge" is necessary to secure your battery using the original tray and holddown clamp. If you don't have the proper battery; the original clamp does not secure it properly, and it simply is not very safe.

Our special 65-66 Battery Tray Kit has been a very popular part for good reason. It consists of a special battery tray that accepts the 67-70 style top holddown and bolts. I can remember many, many years ago welding tabs on an original tray in a 1966 GT350 Shelby just so we could use this type of set up. Now it is much easier. This is really a great idea and super product.

We attended the annual Redskins Rides Car Show at Redskins Park in Ashburn, VA that was held this past Saturday. The Rotary Club of Bailey's Crossroads, VA had their '66 Mustang Convertible on display. Raffle tickets are being sold to give away this beautiful car on September 25th.

After Heart Transplant, Teenager given 1965 Mustang

Ayden Ethridge knew the Ford Mustang was in bad shape. That didn’t make him want it any less.
He had planned on saving money and restoring the rusted and aging car his family owned. The problem was that he’s only 15 years old. And a life saving heart transplant earlier this year left him a little behind on his driver education.
The teenager woke up early Saturday morning and came to Children’s Mercy Hospital where doctors saved his life earlier this year. He thought he was only coming to meet some familiar faces, the folks who’d helped him when was sick. But when Ayden walked out the hospital doors, he saw was that same Mustang, new and restored.
“The best gift,” Ayden said as he sat in his car for the first time.
And then he got out, and gave his mother, Jill Gillett, a tearful hug.
Back in February, Ayden came to Children’s Mercy because of heart failure. While he was sick, his mother said that 1965 Mustang the family owned wold be his one day. It needed some tender loving care, and likely some new brakes. She promised him the car, not knowing if he’d ever get to drive it. But just after Valentine’s Day, the kid from Fredonia, Kansas, became the hospital’s fifth heart transplant patient.
“You’ve got a new heart in the same body for your car,” Gillett said. “(It’s the) same as you.”
The car has new brakes, a new suspension and a new interior, thanks to Ayden’s family and Scott Hoag, the CEO of Mustang Racing Technology.
“We decided that the theme for today would be to keep it in its farm fresh glory,” Hoag said of his company’s restoration work on the car. “This is the car that Ayden has in his mind.”
In between the feeling of shock and hugs with the medical staff and his family, Ayden said already knew the first place he wanted to take the car.
“To school,” he said.
