There were only 562 1965 GT350 Mustangs produced by Shelby American. The '65s are generally the most valuable and sought-after model of Shelbys that were produced. They were very unique in that they were raw, bare-bones...kind of a race car for the street. They were certainly a car for the serious driving enthusiast.

Obviously, these cars are now quite sought after by both collectors and driving enthusiasts.

SFM5S397, as the serial number indicates, is the 397th '65 GT350 produced. Originally sold by J.D. Ball Ford in Miami, FL it comes with its original option top LeMans stripes and special Cragar wheels. Because these cars were made to be driven hard, it's a great bonus when one still is powered by its original 289 High Performance engine. This is one of those cars, as the Ford VIN is clearly stamped in the engine.

The stock aluminum Cobra oil pan, intake, and valve covers highlight the engine compartment. The interior features the stock Shelby installed gauges, wood steering wheel, rear package tray, and racing style seat belts.

We have another update on the restoration of early '66 Shelby 6S033. If you missed the last update, please click here to check it out. Just to recap, this is one of the Carryover GT350s. If you are unfamiliar with those, you may want to check out the web site, www.CarryoverGT350.com.

All of the work is being performed by Jeremy Turner at Maple Hill Restoration. Like me, Jeremy enjoys researching the tiniest details on these unique cars. If you have this passion, it makes it a whole lot more enjoyable and possible to turn out great work like this.

Today, we have pictures of the first paint being applied. The back sides of the front valance, stone deflector, doors, fenders, hood, and trunk lid are refinished. The proper primers, colors and over spray patterns have been duplicated based on lots of research.

1966 GT350 Shelby Carryover For Sale

As the '65 Mustang production year wound down, Shelby American was busy planning the release of the new '66 GT350 Shelby. The new model would feature several changes from the '65 including side mounted rear brake scoops, plexiglass quarter windows, a different dash mounting tachometer, the new '66 Mustang grill, and more. Since the production of the 1966 Mustangs would not start up until mid-August of 1965, Shelby ordered 250 1965 Mustangs in order to get a jump on the production of the new model 1966 Shelby.

These 250 cars, along with 2 prototypes, have recently been referred to as "Carryover" cars. They are quite unique in that they are actually '65 Mustangs. They feature '65 interiors and '65 GT gauge packages along with the associated unique wiring. There are other differences, and you can learn more by clicking here to visit www.CarryoverGT350.com.

Listed here for sale is one of the these unique cars. It's the 99th one, so the Shelby serial number is SFM6S099. It is currently running a Mexican block 302 with a 289 crankshaft, but comes with the all important original 289 High Performance with the Ford VIN stamping. The unique close ratio aluminum T10 transmission is also included and has been rebuilt. The original date coded rear end center section is also included.

The interior is original and features the original date coded tach, original seat upholstery, and perfect original headliner. The floor pans are original along with the date coded front fenders and hood. This Shelby sports the optional Shelby unique Cragar wheels which have been properly re-rimmed. The trunk is super nice and includes an NOS Ford trunk mat and even the original Goodyear Blue Dot spare. The bottom side of the trunk lid still wears its original paint and jack instruction decal. Even the radiator is original and properly date coded.

Tasteful changes have been made to enhance the driving experience including a great sounding side exhaust system with a custom x-pipe, a '65 style real wood steering wheel, and bolt on performance suspension pieces. The original suspension pieces and steering wheel are included. These parts, along with a rear exiting exhaust, would be super easy to install if you have a preference for a totally stock GT350.

Original paperwork with a unique car like this is always a great bonus, and this one has it! The original window sticker, dealer invoice, and even the original bill of sale is included.
