2013 SAAC North East Regional Shelby Meet

The Northeast Regional Shelby Meet put on by the Lehigh Valley Region of the Shelby American Automobile Club is one of our favorite events.

The Friday night social is a great time to catch up with old friends and make some new ones.

Saturday morning brings a nice alternative to the typical "static" car show.  It begins with a great breakfast buffet right at the host hotel in Harrisburg and then the cars are enjoyed with a 60+ mile road tour with stops for cool photo opportunities.  The road tour ends for lunch at Bill Collins Collector Fords.  Later that evening, the banquet is held at the host hotel along with some interesting speakers.

If that isn't enough, we held out to the AACA Museum for a fun, popular vote car show.

Click here or on above picture for more information.  Also check out this thread on the SAAC Forum:  http://saacforum.com/index.php?board=45.0

Customer Car - 1966 Shelby GT350 Mustang

SFM6S2279  1966 Shelby Mustang GT350
www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com
This is a scan of an old print that has been hanging on our showroom wall for a long time.  The car is a '66 GT350 number 6S2279.  It was purchased around 1983 by a good customer and friend of ours, Garland Gentry.  In exchange for a few parts or discounts on parts (I don't really remember!), we were instantly a sponsor of a vintage race car.

I don't think a lot of "race car" modifications were made at all on the car other than the cool side exhaust and the R Model roll bar.  It was certainly nothing like the vintage race cars of today or even of several years ago.  In fact, if I recall, he drove the it to Road Atlanta, raced in the Walter Mitty Challenge, finished in 3rd place, and drove it home!!

It is difficult for me to believe this photo is 30 years old now!!

www.VirginiaClassicMustang.com
Our EG-300 1965 and 1966 Mustang Windshield Washer Hose Kit now comes with the correct ribbed rubber hoses.  The correct plastic washer tee connector is also included.

These hoses were originally ribbed like this from the factory, so it's just another nice little detail to add to a correct restoration.

Customer Car - 1967 Mustang Race Car

1967 Mustang Coupe Race Car.

We always love to feature customer cars here on the Virginia Classic Mustang Blog, and today we have a unique Mustang.  It's a really cool race car, and I'll let Dave, the owner, tell the story!

Unfortunately it is not a 67 Shelby T/A car. It actually wasn't built into a race car until 1979, by a guy named Martin Adams in Charlotte, NC. He bought the car in 1974, drove it through school, and had autocrossed it a bit. Then he decided he really wanted to race, so he flared the fenders, and had Holman Moody install a roll cage, and raced it in GT-1 from 1980 to 83 or so.  He didn't race it a lot and wasn't hugely successful, but he was just involved at the SCCA Club Racing level.

By 1985-86, he had stopped racing and pulled the drivetrain, and was actually going to scrap the body (even though it wasn't in bad shape). Danny Rockett (Hickory NC) found out, and ended up buying it. Danny then added a few more bars, did a bunch of things out of the Boss 302 Chassis Manual including the reinforcement in the base of the shock towers, modifying the front crossmember to lock in the lower control arm pivot points and Lincoln 4-piston front disc brakes. He also redid the flares (they are actually steel, not professionally done but not bad at all for a guy working on it himself). Danny painted it yellow/red in the Terlingua scheme, and autocrossed it from 1986-91.  He later sold it to Andy Killian, and I bought it from him last year. I wanted something to get back into autocross and open track events (and maybe driving schools at some point), but I also wanted an old car that had some sort of history. This car really fit the bill, as it was in great condition, really just needed to have a drivetrain put back in and re-engineer the brakes. along with a few minor upgrades and repairs. I even got the SCCA logbook with it.

Since I purchased it, I have installed a mildly built hydraulic 289  along with my Holman Moody stash (Hi Rise intake/valve covers/steel oil pan), blowproof bellhousing, Toploader 4 spd, 15x8-1/2 and 15x10 American 200S wheels, Koni double adjustable shocks, 10x2-1/2" rear drums, R-Model seat and R-Model gas tank, among other things (a lot of these parts I've had for 15 to 22 years!!!!!!). Still have to do some work towards properly mounting the Lincoln 4 piston front calipers and installing shoulder harnesses, but the car is actually ready to try and start.

Mustangs Number 1 and Number 1 Million

As the 50th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang approaches, Ford Motor Company has been releasing some cool images from their archives.  In today's Blog post, we have some images and the story about Mustang serial number 1 and number 1 million.

By the time the Mustang officially went on sale on April 17, 1964, Ford had been building the cars for about five weeks.  This was done so there would be Mustangs on display on the official opening day.  Not all of these cars were supposed to be sold.  One of these Mustangs happened to be the very first one with the serial number 5F08F100001.  It was shipped to a dealer in Canada and purchased by an airline pilot named Captain Stanley Tucker.

A few weeks after it was sold, Ford realized their mistake and tried to buy it back.  Captain Tucker really liked his new Mustang and initially did not agree.  Eventually, a deal was struck and on March 2, 1966 Ford got the first Mustang and Captain Tucker got a new 1966 Mustang Convertible that was the one millionth Mustang produced.

Ford then donated the very first Mustang to the Henry Ford Museum, where it resides to this day.

This 66 Mustang fastback is originally from Tennessee and has never had any rust.  It was painted in the early 1980's in lacquer.  The paint is very presentable, but it is showing its age with some cracks and chips. It appeared on the cover of the 1997 Virginia Classic Mustang catalog.

The engine was completely rebuilt in 2002 and now has 10K miles.  A brand new T-5 transmission was installed 6,700 miles ago.  The factory carburetor was rebuilt by Pony Carburetors.  The distributor was also rebuild and a Pertronix Ignitor has been installed.  A new gas tank, lines and related components were installed.  A completely new exhaust, tips, and related components were installed.

Most all exterior and interior chrome has been replaced.  The Rally Pac has been completely rebuilt and restored.

The brake system has been completely rebuilt with new lines, hoses, etc. and a 67 dual reservoir master cylinder was added for safety.  The suspension was also completely rebuilt with new bushings, leaf springs, tie rod ends, power steering components, shocks, etc.

The air conditioning was completely rebuilt with a new Sanden compressor, dryer, condenser, hoses, etc.  It works perfectly.

The interior was completely restored with new carpet, seat upholstery, door panels, dash pad, steering wheel, etc.

This Mustang is a super reliable car and can be driven absolutely anywhere.  It has been on many long distance trips and Antique Automobile Club of America tours including a trip from Virginia to Maine and back.

The GT options are complete but are thought to be dealer installed.

Price is $32,000 or best offer.

This is the personal car of Jeremy Turner of Maple Hill Restoration.  For more information about this Mustang, please contact him by clicking here.
