Mustangs on the TV and in the Movies

Before I start the subject in today's post, I just wanted to point out I noticed that the last post here on our Virginia Classic Mustang Blog was post #500!!  Wow!  500 posts...I didn't even realize there were so many!

Anyway, today I wanted to mention a pretty cool site that I found here a while back.  It is the Internet Movie Cars Database.  If you have a chance, check it out.  There is an extensive listing, with photos/stills, of different makes of cars that have appeared in movies or TV shows.  Since the Mustang is such a popular car, you will note that there are quite a few references and photos to Classic Mustangs.  Check it out when you have a chance.  Here are a few examples:

Here's a 65 Mustang Convertible from The Munsters TV show that ran from 1964-66.  Looks like it had a little accident!

I love this one!  It is a 66 GT350 Shelby Mustang.  You will note the red color, no LeMans stripes and Shelby Cragar wheels...cool car!!!!  Oh, it is from the TV show I Spy which ran from 1965-68.
How about this cool 68 Shelby Convertible.  This still shot is from the TV show, Get Smart.  This show ran from 1965-70.

65-66 Mustang Fastback and 67-68 Mustang Coupe / Convertible Trunk Lid Torsion Bars

We now have the Mustang Trunk Lid Torsion Rod / Spring Sets in Stock for the 1965-66 Mustang Fastback and the 1967-68 Mustang Coupe and Convertible.  These rods fit in the trunk hinges and keep the trunk lid in the upright position when it is open.

The 65-66 Mustang Fastback just uses a single rod.  It is our part number SM-9102.

1966 GT350 Mustang Restoration Project: Uncovering Drive Shaft Paint Markings

As we wind down the final couple of months to the completion of our 1965 HiPo Mustang Convertible Project, we are going to take another quick look at our next project.  As mentioned, the next one coming up is a 1966 Carryover GT350 Shelby.  It is number 6S033.

We were doing a bit of research on drive shafts in all of the various HiPo Mustangs, including the GT350's, and discovered what appears to be the original drive shaft in 033.  I won't go into the various "styles" of drive shafts in this post, but rather focus on the various paint markings to be uncovered.

There were very faint markings that we noticed on this particular drive shaft upon removal.  They were actually so faint, they were barely noticed.  Jeremy at Maple Hill Restoration uses both Metal Rescue™ and Evapo-Rust to "clean" items, particularly when we are trying to uncover some factory paint markings.

Our Shelby Drive Shaft started as a typical dirty drive shaft.  The paint markings were so faint, we don't even have any  pictures of them, since they would not show up in an image like this.  All images ©Virginia Classic Mustang Inc

The first order of business was to build a suitable "container" in which to soak the drive shaft.  This was accomplished by cutting a PVC pipe and adding ends to it.

It was amazing how clearly this number appeared after soaking.  We could barely make out this marking at all when the Drive Shaft was initially pulled out of the Shelby.  All images ©Virginia Classic Mustang Inc

Jeremy soaked the drive shaft in Evapo-Rust.  After soaking overnight, it was amazing to see the results.  All of the paint markings, along with the stenciled on yellow number, were quite visible after soaking.  The stenciled number appears to have been applied with some type of roller.  This stencil was probably applied by the manufacturer/supplier of the metal tubing itself, not Ford.  Sorry, but we really don't have any other "firm" information as to what each of these other paint markings represent.

After being out of print for a year or so, the Mustang Recognition Guide is back and now in stock!  I have always thought that this was one of the best reference books for the Classic Mustang.  Each section touches on the unique features of each model year, options, colors, etc.  There are tons of color pictures also.  It is a book that every Mustang owner or enthusiast should have.  226 pages.  Written by Larry Dobbs, Donald Farr, Jerry Heasley, and Rick Kopec.

1965 Mustang High Performance Convertible Restoration Update

Once we get the drive shaft completed, we should be ready to start our 65 HiPo Mustang Convertible!  The final details to get it ready to run are being completed now.

The exhaust has been installed.  You will note that this car uses the early style HiPo exhaust with the resonators (look like mufflers) going into the transverse muffler and then two tail pipes coming out of that muffler.

The brake and fuel lines are installed.  The brake system has been filled, bled and is ready to go.  The suspension pieces and fasteners have been checked and torqued.

We also have fabricated an accelerator linkage rod for the 3 x 2 (tri-power) induction set up.  A manual choke set up has been installed also, so we can use the stock HiPo choke cable assembly.

The radiator and all hoses have been installed also.

NEW! 1967 Mustang and Shelby Radiator Hose Sets with Stapled Clamps


We have a complete line of FoMoCo and Autolite stamped Radiator Hoses for most model years of Mustangs.  You can see them all by clicking here.

Several months ago, we got in a new set of hoses that a lot of 66 GT350 and other Mustang owners had been asking for.  Our part number is EG-4771.  These hoses have been extremely popular.

We now have the 1967 Mustang version of this same hose.  These hoses will be great for that "final detail" on any 289 equipped 67 Mustang, including all of the 1967 model GT350 Shelbys.  Our part number is EG-1871.

The following is the description on our web site:

A special experiment began for the 1966 and 1967 model year at Ford Motor Company. A test was underway to determine if a new assembly line method would help speed up production. This test, at the Dearborn and San Jose assembly plants consisted of attaching clamps to the radiator hoses to save the assemblers time. Note the "Pat Pend" stamp on the hoses. Virtually all Shelby GT350s should have this style of hose, along with most other 289 Mustangs.


These radiator hoses are made by an original OEM manufacturer to the latest SAE standards. They feature correct bends. The hoses have the original double-wire clamps stapled to the hose with the correct orientation as was done on original assembly line hoses. These are the only hoses with this feature. The logo and part number stamped on the hose are the correct ones. The part numbers and logo are printed with the correct font size and style to match the originals exactly. Do not clean hoses with Armor-All or other products that contain solvent. We recommend cleaning by using a very dilute soapy water solution on a damp cloth with very light pressure.
